Insurance:

The cost of private healthcare is not something most people are not familiar with. Unfortunately there is no NHS for pets. It is important that you are able to afford to have your pet treated when it is ill, and for preventive health measures. As such we advise that you consider insuring your pet. There are many policies out there, and as with all insurance you get what you pay for. We recommend that you are familiar with the level of cover you pay for. We would also recommend that policies are for life′. That way if your pet becomes ill with a lifelong illness e.g. diabetes mellitus you do not have the dilemma of how to continue to afford your pets treatment when the period of cover expires. It is important to note that a number of policies require vaccinations to be kept up to date to remain valid.

As with Human Health Insurance, it is better to get your pet insured when it is young and healthy and there are no problems to report.

Exotic pets can be insured too, but fewer companies advertise this fact. Exotics do not readily show signs of disease thus we are very reliant on diagnostics e.g. radiography (X-rays) and blood tests to assess their state of health of many exotics, thus insurance is highly recommended.

An alternative is to set up a regular savings account.
