SDR Ophthalmology


The ophthalmology service is run by Jim Carter BVetMed DVOphthal MRCVS. Jim is one of the founding partners of Abbotskerswell Veterinary Centre and South Devon Referrals. He is the only RCVS Recognised Specialist in Veterinary Ophthalmology in the South West.  He is also a panel member for the BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme.
He achieved his Diploma in Veterinary Ophthalmology after a residency at University of Bristol Veterinary School and subsequently set up the ophthalmology referral service, initially known as Exeter Veterinary Ophthalmology Referrals.

We offer a prompt and competitive ophthalmology referral service for all veterinary species. This is the only ophthalmology service in the South West employing an RCVS Diplomate and Specialist in Veterinary Ophthalmology.

Services include all types of intraocular and extraocular surgery including:

  • Phacoemulsification cataract surgery and intraocular lens placement.
  • Electroretinography (ERG)
  • Entropion and facelift surgery
  • Catholysis
  • Corneal surgery
  • Lens luxation surgery
  • BVA/KC/ISDS examinations
  • Seven day emergency referral service

Cataract surgery (Phacoemulsification)

Early referral is recommended for all cataract assessments. Phacoemulsification is the gold-standard′ procedure for cataract removal. At the initial consultation we assess the suitability of the patient and discuss the procedure with the owner. Surgery can normally be performed within 1-4 weeks.
